Every popular app in this category spawns dozens of fake versions. Many contain banking trojans that record your Easypaisa or JazzCash PIN. Here is how to tell them apart.
Warning signs
- The file arrived through a WhatsApp forward, an SMS link, or an unfamiliar website.
- The app requests permission to read SMS, access contacts, or use accessibility services. A gaming app does not need any of these.
- The file size is noticeably smaller or larger than the official version.
- The icon or name differs slightly, often by an extra letter or number.
- The website has no contact details, company name or terms page.
- You are asked to pay a fee or membership before downloading.
Before you install
Always use the official link
Only the platform’s own website or a verified affiliate page.
Check permissions before granting them
Never grant SMS, contacts or accessibility access.
Let Play Protect scan the file
If it warns you, stop and delete the file.
Turn unknown sources back off
Revoke that permission in settings once the install is done.
If you have already installed a suspicious APK: uninstall it immediately, run an antivirus scan, and change the PINs and passwords on your mobile wallet and bank. Notify your bank if you see any transaction you do not recognise.
What does a Play Protect warning mean?
It means the app came from outside the Play Store. Not every such app is dangerous, but the warning should not be ignored unless you are certain the file came from the official source.
Is an antivirus app enough?
It helps but it is not sufficient. The best protection is not installing the suspicious file in the first place.
